Giving Back Event: Beehive & Planter Build

Beehive Build – Our nation’s food supply depends on bees even though the bee population is diminishing. Now you can do something about it in an innovative way with this teambuilding activity. Did you know that a third of the food we eat depends on bees for pollination? Currently, Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), a devastating condition in which managed beehives experience a dramatic loss in population, threatens honeybee populations nationwide. In some cases, up to 70% of a hive’s bees disappear almost overnight. After being assigned to “hives” of 6-8 members, which are named for specific bee types, and learning a little bit about beekeeping, the participants will jump right into the main component of the activity – building a full double beehive! The room will buzz with excitement (and the sound of hammers and nails) as groups compete to finish the first high-quality beehive. The hives are then donated to local beekeepers who will put them to good use. In some cases, beekeepers may be present to receive the gifts and tell participants more about the local beekeeping industry.

Planter Build – Square foot planters are the newest craze in backyard and community gardens. The planters are 1’x1’, painted nice bright colors, and filled with organic mulch. Utilizing small space, the concept cuts down on gardening chores, saves money, water, and seed, and grows healthier plants. The teams will receive pre-cut lumber, tools, and supplies and instruction on how to build the planters. Building square foot planters will help build the bee population by providing flowering plants and vegetables for the bees to draw pollen from in order to make more flowers and honey. Square foot planters will be distributed to Habitat for Humanity and community gardens to assist in the beautification of the yard and provide organic food to the community.
As in past years, the CHIME attendees are ready to give back and this year will be no different. Sign up to join your colleagues for a meaningful and enjoyable afternoon.

Participation in the is open to members of CHIME and CHIME Foundation representatives* (Registration fee for this program is $25.00.  All proceeds will be donated to a local charity).

Day 2 Keynote – Galvanizing Action for a Healthy Community – Paulette Davidson

    Sponsored by SHI International

    About Paulette Davidson

Paulette Davidson, MBA, FACHE, CMPE, is President and CEO of Monument Health, previously Regional Health. Headquartered in Rapid City, S.D., Monument Health is a community-based health care system with a mission to make a difference, every day. Monument Health offers care in 33 medical specialties and serves 20 communities across western South Dakota and in eastern Wyoming. With over 5,200 physicians and caregivers, Monument Health is comprised of 5 hospitals, 8 specialty and surgical centers and more than 40 medical clinics and health care service centers.

With over 30 years of experience working in hospitals and physician practice environments, Davidson is a respected leader with a reputation for building great health care teams.

Prior to joining Monument Health in 2018, she was with Nebraska Medicine, an academic health system where she held the role of system Chief Human Capital and Patient Experience Officer. Prior to that, Davidson was Chief Executive Officer for their Bellevue Medical Center. While at Indiana University Health Goshen Hospital, in Goshen, Ind., she fulfilled several senior leadership roles, including Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Hospital Operations. She also worked in key leadership roles at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Zion, Ill., and Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion, Ill.

Davidson is a Fellow in the College of American Health Care Executives (FACHE) and Certified Member of the American College of Medical Practice Executives (CMPE). She has a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Notre Dame – Mendoza College of Business in South Bend, Ind., and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin at Kenosha.

We have long known the importance of health on an individual’s well-being. Emphasis is now being placed on the connection between the activities of healthcare delivery organizations and the overall viability of the communities they serve. In January of this year, the Joint Commission added requirements to reduce healthcare disparities for their accreditation of ambulatory, behavioral health, hospital, and critical access hospital organizations. This is just one indication that healthcare provider organizations are expected to increase their participation in driving positive results for the health of the communities they serve. Paulette Davidson started her healthcare journey as a frontline housekeeper and worked her way to the CEO position at Monument Health, a mid-sized healthcare system serving both urban and rural (“rurban”) communities of the greater Black Hills of South Dakota and neighboring states. Hear from Paulette about how she executes the Monument Health mission—”Make a Difference. Every Day.” She will provide practical examples of efforts she has led to not only educate and promote awareness of healthy living strategies but also to create a supportive environment that includes many non-healthcare partners to encourage and support sustainable change that will benefit the communities Monument Health serves for generations to come.

The applications of AI in healthcare include diagnostics, treatment, drug development, personalized medicine, patient monitoring and care, and decision-making support. AI in healthcare aims to improve health outcomes and patient experiences but also faces challenges such as data security and integrity, research flaws that may compromise the validity of AI models, regulatory requirements, ethical considerations, and trust issues. In this Leadership Expedition, thought leaders from across industry will discuss and weigh the promise and potential for generative AI in healthcare against the challenges ahead. This dynamic and engaging session is sure to capture the CHIME23 audience and leave them discussing the pros and cons long after the Forum has concluded.

    TRACK DESCRIPTIONS

Making Things Better with What You Have Today

(Technology Optimization and Potential Immediate Gains) It’s a common tale – a large IT investment is made with little to show for the effort. There are many factors that influence the level of system implementation success including health system size, location, culture, training, and financing, to name a few. Despite the benefits technologies can bring, often the human and capital costs of re-engineering leave many investment capabilities unused or only partially implemented. These sessions will explore mechanisms that contribute to expanded implementation and adoption of existing technology found in health systems today.

    Proven Innovations

(Cutting Edge and Future Leaning Technology) The seismic shift away from traditional healthcare models being demanded today by leaders and patients alike places the CIO on the front lines as health IT innovator. Yet we know that crossing boundaries to enable systemic changes creates chaos along the road to a new status quo. Some healthcare organizations prefer to play it safe, while others embrace more extreme or even riskier technologies – the bleeding edge. This session will explore innovations that are highly sophisticated, nonetheless proven, as the foremost proponent in solving the industry’s fundamental challenges.

The Human Side of Digital Health

(DEI, Workforce Development, and Leadership) Digital health strategies promise everything from improving outcomes, workflows, productivity, and patient satisfaction. In fact, digital health investments grew by 79% the year after the pandemic. While the investment market is shaking out some new entrants, CIOs know that digital advances have amped-up everyone’s expectations including instant access, knowledge sharing, and augmented living. Yet to be successful, digital health requires human IT experts to consider diversity design, change leadership, and workforce development to address the positive and negative consequences for the human side of end-users. Join these sessions to hear about the intersection of digital technology and people.

    Policies that Make a Difference

(State/Federal Policy and Governance) Policymakers and internal governance teams are indispensable. As patients, organizations, governments, and society expect and work towards improved delivery of health and care cross goods and services, the industry is undergoing massive transformation in terms of costs, accessibility, safety, security, and experience.  These sessions will examine recent and anticipated policy and organization-wide considerations to address matters of equity, cybersecurity, affordability, and workforce shortage.

    Powered by Data

(Informatics, Interoperability, AI, Outcomes, Population Health, Data Bias) The early 21st century will undoubtedly be characterized as the information explosion era. With over 90% of the world’s data being generated over the last two years at a rate of 2.5 quintillion bytes per day, it’s no wonder data-driven healthcare is among the fastest-growing objectives for providers and organizations alike. Today, healthcare accounts for roughly 30% of the world’s total data volume; and human-to-technology interaction creates data from around 1,400 digital devices per day. Striving to have the right data, in the right structured format, collected and used securely by the right people, in the right technology application, at the right time in the workflow is a herculean feat; more so if it’s real-time. These sessions will probe matters of informatics, analytics, AI, and analytics for the good of the patient, organization, and population health.
