CHIME Provides Clarifying Details on Smart Hospital Maturity Model Initiative

Ann Arbor, MI, March 14, 2024 – Following the initial announcement of the Smart Hospital Maturity Model initiative, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) is pleased to provide clarifying details on this effort. In an era where the pace of digital health technological innovation outstrips many health systems’ ability to adapt, this initiative empowers healthcare organizations striving to harness the power of digital transformation.

The Smart Hospital Maturity Model addresses the critical need for structure in the strategic approach toward building a “smart hospital,” offering clarity in a healthcare technology environment that is becoming increasingly complex. Russ Branzell, President and CEO of CHIME emphasized the commitment to ensuring the model's appropriateness and validity, “The insights and benchmarks provided by the Smart Hospital Maturity Model will complement and enhance the strategic roadmap offered by the Digital Health Most Wired Program, ensuring that healthcare providers have access to a comprehensive framework for digital transformation. CHIME, along with the industry advisory panel, is committed to ensuring that the model is appropriate, valid, and vendor and platform agnostic. By aligning these initiatives, CHIME continues to lead the way in setting industry standards and empowering healthcare organizations to achieve excellence in digital health.”

CHIME, the trusted voice in digital health leadership, is developing this comprehensive framework through funding provided by care.AI. While the initial work for the development of the model is being sponsored by care.AI, the Smart Hospital Maturity Model focuses on hospital capabilities, not products or companies, and is designed to be vendor and platform agnostic. An expert advisory panel of more than 40 members, including representatives from CHIME, the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), The Leapfrog Group, and the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, ensures the model's platform and vendor neutrality, objectivity and validity.

The Digital Health Most Wired program and the Smart Hospital Maturity Model serve as foundational elements for digital transformation in healthcare. Given the rapid pace of change in the industry, CHIME recognizes these initiatives alone are not sufficient. CHIME looks forward to collaborating with other organizations and solution providers to support vendor and platform agnostic initiatives that can further accelerate health and care transformation.

To ensure a diverse range of perspectives, CHIME invites additional voices to join the advisory panel for the Smart Hospital Maturity Model. Providers interested in contributing to this initiative are encouraged to reach out for inclusion in future discussions. Moreover, CHIME will host an informational webinar to provide further details about this project on Tuesday, March 26th at 12pm ET .
