CIO’s Role of Innovation to Fight the Opioid Crisis
In 2015 alone, the opioid epidemic killed 33,000 people and harmed 12.5 million people. The daily death toll from drug overdoses equivalents to a Boeing 737 crashing and killing all the passengers on board.
The Research Information Solutions and Innovation team at Nationwide Children’s Hospital has developed a strategic initiative to fight the opioid crisis with digital innovation. In collaboration with the Center for Pediatric Trauma Research, our informatics team designed a virtual reality app as a potential non-pharmaceutical analgesic for burn patients. Data were collected from a pilot study among 59 pediatric burn patients aged 7-17 years old.
In this talk, I will describe the opioid epidemic in American; share innovation in virtual reality to reduce the prescription of opioid prescriptions; and discuss an enterprise strategy to build a culture of digital innovation
