The CHIME National Patient ID Challenge: Ensuring We Match the Right Patient to the Right Care Every Time
Event Information
Imagine going to your local healthcare provider 10 times this year and discovering that on only eight of those visits, or only 80 percent of the time, was your provider able to correctly match you with your personal medical record. Anything less than 100 percent patient identification accuracy increases the risk that your doctor is making healthcare choices based on missing or inaccurate information, or possibly even someone else’s medical record! Despite these very serious safety concerns, these are the daunting odds that patients seeking care face on a daily basis. Why? In part, because there is no universal solution for identifying and accurately matching patients to their personal health information.
Matching the right patient with the right data at the right time is critical to ensuring patient safety and realizing the full benefits of health IT. Yet, the federal government is prohibited from creating a national patient identification system that would ensure that patients are accurately matched to their records. As we continue to digitize the healthcare system, it has become clear that this problem can’t be allowed to persist any longer. This is why CHIME teamed with HeroX to launch the National Patient ID Challenge: a $1 million global competition aimed at incentivizing new, early-stage, and experienced innovators to accelerate the creation and adoption of a solution for ensuring 100 percent accuracy in identifying patients in the United States. CHIME will officially launch the $1 million challenge in January 2016.
