Mass General Brigham Joins Prominence and Snowflake at HIMSS

Mike Pandolfi joins Prominence Advisors at HIMSS to co-present "Enhancing Healthcare Quality Insights: Leveraging Snowflake, Python, and Tableau for Faster Performance Metrics" with Snowflake. This session will feature insights from the Mass General Brigham team on how migrating on-premises EDW and other manual sources to Snowflake has significantly improved the performance and availability of their OCMO Quality Dashboard in Tableau.

Session Overview

This dashboard spans four critical quality domains—Effectiveness, Equity, Experience, and Safety—and integrates data from diverse sources, including Epic Clarity, Vizient, HCAHPS, Real-Time Surveys, NDNQI, and NHSN. By utilizing Snowflake’s databases, SQL Stored Procedures, Python libraries, and SnowSQL commands, the implementation optimized data transformation and availability. Additionally, Python notebooks facilitated the download of API data, light transformations, transferring and staging, while Tableau connected to Snowflake SQL tables to deliver actionable insights for healthcare quality improvement.

Attendees will explore:

• Snowflake Stored Procedures: Store SQL used to load and transform data for specific ETL steps.

• Snowflake Python Libraries: Enable connecting and loading Snowflake tables from a Python notebook outside the Snowflake environment.

• Snowflake SnowSQL Commands: Use of the PUT command to place CSV files from a local location into a Snowflake stage for later loading into a Snowflake SQL table.

• Azure Data Factory: Copy tables from on-premises EDW into Snowflake.

• Python Notebooks: Call Vizient APIs, load CSV/Excel sources, and perform light transformations to stage the data in Snowflake.

• Tableau: Connect to Snowflake SQL tables using scheduled extracts to display detailed and summary data, enabling trend exploration and informed decision-making.
